The Norwegian Institute of Public Accountants

The Norwegian Institute of Public Accountants (Revisorforeningen) is the professional body for registered public accountants and state authorised public accountants in Norway. 3 775 registered and state authorised public accountants are members of Revisorforeningen (January 1st 2011).

Revisorforeningen has also 176 student members in practice and 933 student members under education. The total number of members is 4 884 (January 1st 2011).

Membership of the Institute is voluntary for public accountants. The licence as registered and state authorised public accountants is given by the governmental body The Financial Supervisory Authority of Norway (Finanstilsynet). Most public accountants in public practice are members of the Institute. The licence gives the public accountant the right to act as a statutory auditor.

The objectives of Revisorforeningen are to raise the professional standards of its members, to ensure that its members observe the ethical standards, to represent its members' interests in relation to the authorities and to the general public, to express opinions on professional matters, and to promote the education of prospective auditors. As one of the means to achieve this, Revisorforeningen has developed a professional code of ethics for its members. The professional code provides standards on professional conduct and auditors' independence, and regulates the auditor's relationship to his or her clients, to other accountants, and to the general public. The code is in line with the IFAC rules.

Publishing
The Norwegian Institute of Public Accountants publishes books and other publications within auditing, financial reporting, taxes and VAT, etc. The target groups are the Institute’s own members, students and others whose occupation or profession requires updated knowledge within these fields.
Revisorforeningen publish reference works, manuals and textbooks, mostly in hard copy, but in electronic format also.
Two annually updated reference works are “Revisors Håndbok” (Manual for Accountants) and “Merverdiavgift i regnskapet” (VAT in the Accounts). These are well established tools for auditors and accounting staff.

Continuing Professional Education (CPE)
Members of The Norwegian Institute of Public Accountants are subject to requirements for continuing professional education. All public accountants are required to spend at least 105 hours per three-year period on continuing professional education. Within the fields of auditing, ethics, financial reporting, taxes and VAT, we offers courses at both intermediate and advanced levels. The education of public accountants is organized by universities and business schools and the Institute is not directly involved in this.

”Geilokonferansen” is a professional conference which is held in Geilo every year in September. It is a three-day conference, with an à la carte menu consisting of issues of current interest in auditing, financial reporting, taxes and VAT. In 2007, approx. 600 attended this conference.

”Fagdagene” is a two-day conference held in Oslo in November every year. Like Geilokonferansen, this is based on an à la carte concept, and the attendants may choose from a range of issues in current professional debate. In 2007 approx. 400 attended “Fagdagene”.

”Skattedagene” (annual update on Taxes) is another annually recurring event, valued by everyone whose work involves tax and VAT issues. The course gives a current update on tax law and is held at a number of locations throughout Norway.
